Upper Nethan Gorge is a serene gorge shaped by the River Nethan, featuring ancient woodlands that host a diverse array of species. This habitat is particularly notable for its locally uncommon plants, including broadleaved helleborine, wood melick, and meadow saxifrage. The area is also home to great spotted woodpeckers and buzzards, making it a tranquil spot for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can look for Himalayan balsam and Japanese knotweed, both peaking in May, with best viewing times around 01:00. The gorge is also a potential site for spotting peregrine falcons in October at dusk, along with grey squirrels in July. April brings the chance to see bronze shieldbugs, adding to the variety of wildlife throughout the year.
