Stenhouse Wood is an ancient deciduous woodland located alongside Shinnel Glen, featuring a rich tapestry of ash, wych elm, and oak trees. The ground flora is diverse, showcasing mosses, lichens, and a variety of wildflowers, including the notable toothwort, which blooms with its striking white flowers in spring. This serene habitat is a perfect example of natural woodland ecology. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see grey squirrels year-round, with peak activity in September. February is the standout month for birdwatching, as species like the common buzzard, magpie, and various tits are most frequently observed. Notable sightings also include tawny owls in May, making this a great time to explore the reserve for a chance to witness these fascinating creatures.
