Red Moss of Balerno is a unique raised bog located on the edge of the Pentland Hills, making it the only one within the City of Edinburgh. This special habitat features a deep peat layer that has formed over thousands of years, creating a vibrant ecosystem. In summer and autumn, visitors can enjoy a stunning display of pink-purple heather, sundews, ragged-robin, and Sphagnum mosses, highlighting the reserve's natural beauty. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of bird species throughout the year. January is particularly fruitful for sightings, with highlights including Nuthatch and Red-legged Partridge peaking during this month. March is also notable for Brambling and Treecreeper, while May brings Tufted Duck and Northern Lapwing. For the best viewing times, early morning around 01:00 is recommended, especially during the peak months.
