Lawthorn Wood is a small, mature deciduous woodland located on the edge of Irvine. The reserve features a tall canopy primarily composed of ash trees, alongside beech and lime. Once abundant with elm trees, the dead trunks now serve as vital nesting sites for various bats and birds, including the great spotted woodpecker, enhancing the woodland's ecological character. Visitors to Lawthorn Wood can look for a variety of wildlife throughout the year. May is particularly vibrant, with sightings of species such as the Peacock butterfly, Blue Tit, and Lesser Celandine peaking during this month. For those interested in insects, the Common Green Grasshopper and Azure Damselfly are best observed in August, while the Spring Crocus can be spotted as early as February. Early morning visits around 01:00 are recommended for optimal wildlife activity.
