Hermand Birchwood

Hermand Birchwood is a significant area of birch woodland situated on remnants of a raised bog, characterized by a rich understorey of blaeberry, heather, and broad buckler fern. The damp conditions create a unique habitat that supports a variety of mosses and lichens, making it an essential site for biodiversity. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see species such as the Eurasian Green Woodpecker and Eurasian Jay, particularly active in March around midday. Other notable sightings include the Eurasian Blackbird peaking in May and the Tawny Owl, best observed at dawn in September. The reserve is a great destination for birdwatching, especially during peak activity times in early spring.
