Handa Island is a remarkable wildlife reserve located off the west coast of Sutherland, Scotland. Covering 309 hectares, it features dramatic cliffs and diverse habitats, making it a haven for birdlife and maritime vegetation. Designated as a Scottish Wildlife Trust nature reserve, Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and Special Protection Area (SPA), Handa Island is home to around 100,000 seabirds, including notable species like guillemots, puffins, and great skuas. Visitors can expect to see a variety of wildlife, particularly in May when activity peaks for species such as the Parasitic Jaeger and Great Skua, best observed around noon. Puffins are most prominent in July, especially at dusk, while other birds like the Red Grouse and Black Guillemot also thrive during this time. The island offers a unique opportunity to witness these seabirds in their natural habitat, making it a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
