Gight Wood, situated on the slopes of the River Ythan in Aberdeenshire, is one of the last remnants of ancient woodland in the region. This broadleaved habitat, featuring species such as hazel, oak, and rowan, provides a refuge for various wildlife, including bats, brown hares, and foxes. Its ecological significance is underscored by its designation as a nature reserve. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with peak observations occurring in March. Look out for woodpigeons and siskins, which are most active around midnight, while coal tits and carrion crows peak in March as well. May brings sightings of the Eurasian sparrowhawk and the great spotted woodpecker, with the latter best observed at dusk.
