Erraid Wood, located on the northeast edge of the Pentland Hills, features mature broadleaved woodland that provides a rich habitat for various wildlife. The reserve offers breathtaking views across East Lothian and the Firth of Forth, making it a picturesque destination for nature enthusiasts. Its diverse ecosystem is particularly important for woodland birds, including spotted flycatcher and treecreeper. Visitors can expect to see a variety of species, with peak activity in July around 01:00, when magpies, robins, and red foxes are frequently observed. Other notable sightings during this time include grey squirrels and woodpigeons. For those interested in winter wildlife, redwings can be spotted in January, while great spotted woodpeckers are best seen in April.
