Dalmellington Moss is a raised bog situated on the floodplain of the River Doon, characterized by hummocks of heather and deergrass interspersed with waterlogged hollows rich in Sphagnum mosses and cottongrass. This unique habitat supports a diverse array of wildlife, including various beetles, moths, and dragonflies, making it a vital ecological area. Visitors can look for species such as the Common Toad, which peaks in activity during March, particularly around midnight. Other notable sightings include Brambling and Willow Tit in February, best observed at dawn, while April brings opportunities to see Cuckooflower and Water Avens. The overall best month for wildlife observation is March, with peak activity times often around midnight.
