Blackcraig Wood is a vibrant woodland located along a dramatic sea cliff, featuring a diverse mix of oak, birch, ash, and wych elm. This area is notable for its rich biodiversity, including the elusive purple hairstreak butterfly, which thrives in the oak canopy. The forest floor is adorned with springtime blooms of bluebells, ivy, and great wood-rush, creating a picturesque habitat for various wildlife. Visitors to Blackcraig Wood can expect to see red squirrels peaking in October, while grey squirrels are most active in January. Birdwatchers may spot nuthatches and blackcaps, particularly in August and April, respectively. For those interested in nocturnal wildlife, July offers opportunities to observe noctules and soprano pipistrelles. The best time for wildlife sightings is generally around 01:00, especially during the peak month of August.
