Bawsinch and Duddingston is home to Duddingston Loch, the only natural freshwater loch in Edinburgh. This diverse reserve features mixed woodland, scrub, grassland, and reedbeds, making it a vital habitat for various wildlife. It is particularly significant for breeding and wintering wildfowl and is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Visitors can expect to see a variety of bird species year-round, with notable sightings including Mute Swans, Tufted Ducks, and Canada Geese peaking in March. Winter months are ideal for observing Eurasian Bullfinches and Little Grebes, while the best time for birdwatching is around midnight. The reserve is also home to otters, which can be spotted swimming along the shore during winter.
