Ballachuan Hazelwood is an Atlantic hazelwood forest managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, showcasing one of the finest examples of Scottish temperate rainforest. This nature reserve features a diverse habitat with a rich array of lichens, bryophytes, and fungi, alongside wetland areas that support butterflies. The woodland is also home to deer and pine marten, making it a unique ecological treasure overlooking Cuan Sound. For wildlife enthusiasts, April is the prime month to visit, with peak activity around midnight. Look out for common chaffinches, robins, and greylag geese, which are frequently observed during this time. Other notable species include buzzards and oystercatchers, particularly active in March, while Canada geese and hooded crows are best spotted in July during the evening.
