Ayr Gorge Woodlands is a stunning nature reserve located in Ayrshire, characterised by its steep sandstone cliffs and ancient woodlands primarily composed of oak, ash, and impressive old beeches. This area is recognised for its ecological significance, supporting a diverse range of invertebrates, plants, fungi, and bat species, including Daubenton’s and brown long-eared bats, making it a vital habitat for wildlife. Visitors can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with April being the standout month for wildlife activity. During this time, look out for buzzards, great spotted woodpeckers, and few-flowered garlic, all peaking in observations around midnight. Additionally, January offers opportunities to spot mallards and grey herons, while February is ideal for blue tits, robins, and jays, providing a rich tapestry of wildlife to enjoy across the seasons.
