Auchalton Meadow is a stunning orchid-rich grassland located on the site of 19th Century lime workings, where remnants of kilns, spoil mounds, tracks, and a small quarry can still be observed. This unique habitat supports a diverse range of flora, particularly various orchids such as the fragrant orchid and greater butterfly orchid, thriving in the impoverished soils of the area. Visitors can look for wildlife such as woodpigeons, great spotted woodpeckers, robins, and chaffinches, with peak activity occurring in June around 01:00. Additionally, primroses can be spotted in February, while pine martens are more likely seen in December. The best time to experience the vibrant wildlife of Auchalton Meadow is during the summer months, when the reserve is alive with activity.
