Covering 550 hectares, it features a diverse range of habitats, including mudflats, salt marsh, farmland, pools, oak woodland, and hillside scrub. Established in 1970, the reserve is managed by the RSPB and offers visitors a chance to explore its scenic trails, picnic areas, and well-equipped hides. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to observing a variety of species, particularly in May when activity peaks. Notable sightings include Great White Egrets, Teal, and Redshanks, often best viewed around 13:00. The reserve is also home to breeding Lapwings and Redshanks, with the arrival of Pied Flycatchers and other warblers marking the spring season. With binoculars and pond dipping kits available for hire, Ynys-hir is a fantastic spot for wildlife watching throughout the year.
