Wood of Cree

The Wood of Cree is a stunning nature reserve located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, approximately 4 miles north-north-west of Newton Stewart. As the largest ancient woodland in southern Scotland, it spans about 690 acres and features a diverse range of habitats, including wood pasture, open moorland, and wet floodplain woodland. Managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, this reserve is renowned for its spectacular bluebell carpets and is home to around 113 bird species, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Wildlife highlights include the arrival of migratory birds such as Pied Flycatchers and Cuckoos in May, while spring brings the vibrant display of Bluebells and the sounds of various warblers. The best time to observe bats, including the Soprano Pipistrelle and Daubenton's Bat, is in April around 1:00 AM. Visitors may also spot otters in the rivers and a variety of other species throughout the year, making each visit a unique experience.
