Vange Marsh in South Essex is a diverse wetland habitat featuring a mix of fresh and saltwater lagoons, making it an ideal location for various bird species. This nature reserve offers trails and footpaths for exploration and is managed in partnership with the Land Trust. Notable for its muddy conditions, particularly in autumn and winter, Vange Marsh is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) that supports a rich array of wildlife throughout the year. Birdwatchers will find Vange Marsh particularly rewarding in August, when passage waders and a variety of species like Cetti's Warbler, Greenfinch, and Whitethroat are most active, often peaking around dusk. Winter visitors such as Wigeons can also be spotted, while February brings the chance to see Spotted Redshanks. With resident cattle grazing the land, the reserve offers a unique experience for wildlife enthusiasts year-round, though visitors should be cautious of muddy and uneven terrain.
