The Loons and Loch of Banks is the largest remaining wetland in Orkney, featuring a diverse landscape of open water, marshy grassland, swamp fen, mire, and reedbeds. This nature reserve is a haven for wetland wildlife, providing a rich habitat for various species of wildfowl and waders. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil surroundings and the unique Listening Wall, designed to enhance the natural sounds of the area, while also supporting local biodiversity through native wildflower planting. For wildlife enthusiasts, June is the prime month to visit, with peak activity for species like the Shoveler, Greylag Goose, and Tufted Duck, often best observed around midnight. Other notable sightings include the Eurasian Coot in April and the Northern Lapwing in May, with optimal viewing times typically around dusk or early morning. The reserve is also home to the rare Great Yellow Bumblebee, making it a fantastic spot for both birdwatching and appreciating the area's rich insect life.
