The Lodge is a remarkable nature reserve located in Sandy, Bedfordshire, featuring the largest stretch of heathland in the county. This diverse habitat includes rolling heathland, acid grasslands, and hilly woodlands, making it a vital area for various wildlife species. The reserve is part of an RSPB initiative aimed at restoring heathland ecosystems, which have been largely diminished since the 1800s. Visitors can explore the organic gardens and enjoy the rich biodiversity that thrives in this restored environment. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to observing a variety of species throughout the year. Winter months are ideal for spotting large flocks of thrushes and Redpolls, particularly around 16:00 in December. As spring approaches, March becomes a highlight for birdwatchers, with sightings of Brambling and Common Raven peaking at dusk. The reserve is also home to Natterjack Toads, making it an excellent location for amphibian enthusiasts.
