Tay Reedbeds

Tay Reedbeds, located along the north bank of the River Tay in Perthshire, is home to the UK's largest continuous reedbed, covering around 240 hectares. Managed by the RSPB since 2018, this reserve provides a rich habitat for a variety of wildlife, including Bearded Tits, Marsh Harriers, and Water Rails. Visitors can explore the 7km Taybank Circular path, which offers stunning views and opportunities for wildlife observation. Throughout the year, Bearded Tits can be spotted flitting across the reeds, with peak sightings occurring in May, particularly at dawn around 09:00. Marsh Harriers are also frequently seen hunting in the area, especially in May around 10:00. Other notable species include Water Rails, which are best observed in March at 11:00, and Red Squirrels peaking in October. The diverse habitats created by ongoing reed cutting enhance the chances of encountering various birds and mammals throughout the seasons.
