Swell Wood is an ancient woodland and abandoned oak plantation located along a 10-mile ridge from Langport to the Blackdown Hills. This diverse habitat features towering oak trees, which provide nesting sites for Grey Herons and Little Egrets, as well as a rich ground flora including Bluebells and Dog's Mercury. The reserve also supports a variety of wildlife, including the elusive Hazel Dormouse and several bat species, making it a vital ecological area. For wildlife enthusiasts, January is the best month to visit, with peak sightings of species such as Eurasian Blue Tit, Coal Tit, and Marsh Tit. Notably, the largest colony of breeding Grey Herons in South-West England can be observed nesting from March to June. Early mornings are ideal for spotting Common Cranes, while the Woodland Trail offers a close-up view of the heron nests, allowing visitors to experience the vibrant sounds of the treetop canopy.
