Stour Estuary is a captivating nature reserve located to the east of Colchester, featuring ancient woodlands that border the picturesque estuary of the River Stour. This area is rich in biodiversity, offering habitats for various species, including Hazel Dormice and a variety of waterfowl. The reserve is notable for its seasonal changes, with vibrant displays of flora in spring and a wealth of birdlife during winter months, making it a significant site for wildlife enthusiasts. Wildlife highlights include a diverse array of birds, particularly in February when species like the Canada Goose, Hawfinch, and Cetti's Warbler are most frequently observed. Early morning visits are ideal for spotting these species, as many peak around midnight or early afternoon. Spring also brings the chance to see Teal, while summer showcases butterflies and autumn reveals fascinating fungi. The reserve's rich habitats ensure there is always something special to discover throughout the year.
