Stanford Wharf is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) located along the Thames estuary, featuring expansive mudflats, scrubland, and a significant sea wall. This reserve is a vital habitat for a variety of wildlife, particularly wintering and passage birds, including Avocet and Black-tailed Godwits, which find refuge in the intertidal zones and on the old sea walls during high tide. Visitors to Stanford Wharf can expect to see a diverse range of bird species, especially in February when activity peaks. Look out for Teal, Oystercatchers, and Black-headed Gulls, all of which are best observed around midnight. Other notable species include Shelduck, Curlew, and various gulls, making this a prime location for birdwatching during the winter months.
