Rye Meads

Rye Meads is a 58.5-hectare wetland reserve located in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, part of the internationally important Lea Valley Ramsar site and a Special Protection Area. Managed by both the RSPB and the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, it features a variety of habitats including reedbeds, lagoons, and ancient flood meadows. The reserve is popular with walkers, birdwatchers, and families, offering trails, hides, and a visitor centre for an immersive nature experience. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting a range of species throughout the year. January is particularly fruitful, with sightings of Tufted Ducks, Gadwalls, and Eurasian Coots peaking during this month. For those interested in specific species, Green Sandpipers are best observed in February, while Red-crested Pochards peak in August. The trails provide excellent opportunities to see Kingfishers and Common Terns, especially during the summer nesting season.
