RSPB
Rainham Marshes is an RSPB nature reserve located on the outskirts of London, adjacent to the Thames Estuary in Purfleet, Thurrock, and the London Borough of Havering. This tranquil wetland habitat is meticulously managed to support a diverse range of wildlife, including marshland birds, Water Voles, and various insects. The reserve features a mosaic of wet grassland and semi-permanent pools, creating ideal conditions for species such as Lapwings and Redshanks. For birdwatchers, January is the prime time to visit, with notable sightings including Water Pipits, Bearded Reedlings, and Common Sandpipers peaking around midday. The reserve is also home to wintering Short-eared Owls and a variety of wildfowl, making it a vibrant spot for wildlife enthusiasts. Look out for the Western Marsh Harrier at dusk in February and the Eurasian Curlew in September for a rewarding experience.
