Portmore Lough is a tranquil nature reserve located in southwest County Antrim, Northern Ireland. This lowland, wet-grassland habitat features a mosaic of open water, reedbed, and fen, creating a rich environment for diverse wildlife. Designated as a Ramsar site, Special Protection Area (SPA), and Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI), it is also part of a Royal Society for the Protection of Birds nature reserve, offering stunning views across the Lough and surrounding landscape. Visitors can expect to see a variety of bird species throughout the year, with notable peaks in July for Tree Sparrows, Teals, and Great Crested Grebes. Spring is particularly vibrant as Northern Lapwings display over the meadows, while autumn brings large flocks of wildfowl, including Greylag Geese and Pochards. The best time for wildlife observation is around midnight, when activity levels are highest, making Portmore Lough a rewarding destination for nature enthusiasts.
