Ouse Washes, the largest washland in the UK, spans 2,513.6 hectares between St Ives in Cambridgeshire and Downham Market in Norfolk. This biologically significant Site of Special Scientific Interest is also designated as a Ramsar site, a Special Protection Area, and a Special Area of Conservation. The reserve features a unique habitat of flood-prone grazing pastures, creating rich environments for diverse waterfowl and wading birds, particularly during the winter months. Winter is an excellent time to visit Ouse Washes, as thousands of ducks and Whooper Swans return from Iceland, with Wigeon often seen in large flocks. Spring brings breeding activity from Snipe, Lapwings, and Redshanks, while Garganey and Tree Sparrows can be spotted. Notable sightings peak during dusk, particularly in June and August, making these times ideal for observing species like the Common Kingfisher and Black-crowned Night Heron.
