Ouse Fen

Ouse Fen is an evolving nature reserve located where the River Great Ouse meets the Cambridgeshire Fens. This ambitious project is transforming a former sand and gravel quarry into a 700-hectare wetland, featuring the largest reedbed in the UK, spanning 460 hectares. The landscape includes reedbed blocks, open water pools, and interconnected ditches, creating a dynamic habitat for a variety of wildlife. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a diverse range of species, particularly during peak observation times. January is an excellent month for spotting Bearded Reedlings and Whooper Swans, with activity peaking around 15:00. August offers opportunities to witness the elusive Eurasian Bittern and Great Egret, especially at dusk. Spring is ideal for observing the courtship displays of Great Crested Grebes, while summer highlights include the vibrant Reed Buntings.
