Nene Washes

Nene Washes is a remarkable 1,522-hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest located on the banks of the River Nene in Cambridgeshire. This Ramsar site and Special Area of Conservation is one of the few remaining areas of washland in the UK, featuring a mix of grassland and flooded landscapes that support a diverse range of wildlife. The reserve is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, providing vital habitat for numerous species of wildfowl and waders throughout the year. Birdwatchers will find Nene Washes particularly rewarding in January, when sightings peak for species such as Common Cranes, Short-eared Owls, and Whooper Swans, often best observed around 15:00. The area is also home to impressive birds of prey, including Western Marsh Harriers and Common Buzzards. With its rich biodiversity, including breeding Black-tailed Godwits and a variety of waterfowl, Nene Washes is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts at any time of year.
