Montiaghs Moss is a tranquil nature reserve featuring a mosaic of pools and heather, located in Northern Ireland. This former lowland raised bog, once used for peat extraction, now supports a diverse range of water-loving wildlife. Visitors can explore a 1,100m trail with boardwalks and mown pathways, making it an accessible spot for nature enthusiasts. Suitable footwear is recommended due to muddy conditions in parts of the reserve. In spring and summer, Montiaghs Moss is alive with activity, particularly from dragonflies and damselflies, with 13 breeding species recorded. Look for butterflies such as the Irish damselfly, Marsh Fritillary, and Cryptic Wood White, especially in July when sightings peak. Other notable species include the Speckled Wood and Green-veined White butterflies, both best observed around 1:00 PM during their peak months. Birdwatchers can also spot buzzards and kestrels year-round, while snipe frequent the wet areas.
