Mill Dam, located on the island of Shapinsay in Orkney, is a vital wetland habitat featuring a mix of marshy fen, mire, flower-rich grassland, and dry heathland. This reserve, which was dammed in the 1880s, provides excellent opportunities for wildlife observation year-round, with a dedicated hide offering panoramic views of the diverse birdlife that frequents the area. Birdwatchers can expect to see a variety of species throughout the seasons. Spring and summer are ideal for spotting Shoveler, Tufted Duck, Wigeon, and various waders, while winter attracts large flocks of wildfowl like Teal and Mallard. Notable sightings peak in January, particularly for Teal and other species, making it an excellent time for visitors. The reserve also offers chances to see Hen Harrier and Peregrine during the colder months, adding to its appeal as a family-friendly destination for nature enthusiasts.
