Mersehead is a diverse nature reserve located on the scenic north shore of the Solway coast, featuring a mix of freshwater pools, woodland, farmland, mudflats, and a stunning beach. This extensive wetland and saltmarsh area is designated as a haven for breeding waders and wintering waterfowl, making it an ideal spot for year-round wildlife observation. Autumn is particularly spectacular at Mersehead, with large flocks of wintering Barnacle Geese arriving in November, peaking around midnight. Visitors can also enjoy sightings of Wigeon and Eurasian Blackbirds during this time. In spring, the reserve comes alive with the croaks of rare Natterjack Toads and the songs of territorial birds, while summer offers the chance to see fledgling birds. February is notable for observing Shovelers and Teal, making it another excellent time to visit.
