Loch Ruthven is a tranquil nature reserve nestled among picturesque woodland and heather-covered hills in Scotland. This remote loch is particularly notable for its breeding population of Slavonian Grebes, a Schedule 1 protected species, which can be found among the sedge beds. The reserve is managed by RSPB Scotland, ensuring ideal conditions for wildlife while also protecting the area's historical significance, including the remains of a crannog. For the best wildlife viewing, visit Loch Ruthven in early spring to see the stunning Slavonian Grebes in their vibrant plumage. Peak activity for various species occurs throughout the year, with Horned Grebes and Little Grebes best observed in August around 16:00. Ospreys can be spotted in April at dusk, while March is ideal for observing Teal and Wigeon. June offers opportunities to see Reed Buntings and Red Kites, making it a great time for birdwatching enthusiasts.
