Loch of Strathbeg, located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is Britain’s largest dune loch and a vital wetland habitat. Designated as a special protection area, it is managed by the RSPB and features a mix of wetlands, dunes, and grasslands. The reserve is renowned for its wintering populations of Pink-footed Geese, with at least 20,000 birds flocking to the area during the colder months, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can expect to see a variety of bird species throughout the year, with peak activity in May. Notable sightings include the Western Marsh Harrier and Great White Egret, both best observed around 11:00 AM. In winter, look for Whooper Swans and Shovelers, particularly in January. The reserve is also home to breeding waders like Lapwings and Redshanks, making spring an excellent time for birdwatching.
