Loch of Spiggie is a stunning nature reserve located in Shetland, featuring the expansive waters of Lochs Spiggie and Brow, surrounded by lush greenery and close to the sea. This area, managed by RSPB Scotland, is designated for its rich biodiversity, including breeding waders and three nationally-rare plant species. The lochs are among the largest naturally nutrient-rich bodies of water in Shetland, making them a vital habitat for various wildlife throughout the year. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a diverse range of species, particularly during the peak months of May and September. Notable sightings include Whooper Swans in September, Arctic Terns and Great Skuas in May, and a variety of waders such as Lapwing and Curlew. For the best viewing experience, visit in the early hours around 01:00 in May, when activity is at its peak, or during the afternoons in September for Whooper Swans.
