Insh Marshes

Insh Marshes, located between Kingussie and Kincraig in Badenoch and Strathspey, covers approximately 10 square kilometres of the River Spey floodplain. This national nature reserve, managed by the RSPB, is renowned for its diverse habitats, including marshland and woodland, and is considered one of Europe's most significant wetlands. The area is undergoing restoration to enhance its natural floodplain ecosystem, with efforts to remove invasive species and promote native flora. Visitors to Insh Marshes can expect to see a variety of wildlife, particularly in July when Roe Deer, Speckled Wood butterflies, and Meadow Browns are most active. The reserve is also home to Red Deer, which peak in September, and a range of bird species, including Greenfinches in May. Early morning visits around 01:00 are ideal for spotting these species, as this time shows heightened activity across various wildlife.
