Hoy is a stunning nature reserve located on the second largest island of Orkney, featuring a diverse landscape that includes sweeping moorland, dramatic sandstone cliffs, and ancient woodlands. This area is designated for its rich habitats, which support a variety of wildlife, including breeding White-tailed Eagles, Hen Harriers, and Red-throated Divers. The reserve's iconic features, such as the Old Man of Hoy sea-stack and the towering cliffs at St John's Head, provide breathtaking views year-round. For wildlife enthusiasts, February is the prime month to visit, with notable sightings of Golden-head Moss, Ringed Plovers, and Curlews peaking around midnight. Dusk in May is ideal for spotting Redpolls and Common Cuckoos, while June offers a chance to see Black-headed Gulls. The coastal walks and moorland trails provide excellent opportunities to observe a variety of birds and plants, making Hoy an exceptional destination for nature lovers.
