Hodbarrow is a unique nature reserve that has evolved from an old iron mine into a serene coastal lagoon and grassland habitat, situated by the Duddon estuary. This tranquil area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is home to diverse wildlife, including breeding terns, Ringed Plovers, Redshanks, and Oystercatchers. The reserve's management focuses on creating optimal conditions for its inhabitants, including the protected Great Crested Grebe and various tern species. The best time to visit Hodbarrow is from May to July, when the tern colony is particularly active. Peak sightings of species such as the Red-breasted Merganser and Sandwich Tern occur in July, with optimal viewing times around 14:00. Visitors may also spot Common Ringed Plovers at dusk and can enjoy the vibrant insect and flower communities thriving on the limestone remnants.
