Hest Bank, located on the outskirts of Lancaster, offers a stunning view of the wild landscape of Morecambe Bay, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This area is renowned for its extensive mudflats, which provide a rich habitat for various wading birds, ducks, and geese. The reserve is an ideal spot for birdwatching, with several vantage points to appreciate the diverse avian life that thrives in this unique environment. Visitors can expect to see a range of species, particularly in January when activity peaks, with sightings of Moorhens and Common Eiders. Other notable birds include Pintails and Red-breasted Mergansers, which are best observed in February and April, respectively. The varied beak lengths of the wading birds, such as Curlews and Oystercatchers, allow them to forage effectively in the mud, making Hest Bank a captivating destination for wildlife enthusiasts throughout the year.
