Havergate Island, located 2 miles south of Orford in Suffolk, is a vital RSPB nature reserve encompassing 500 acres of diverse habitats, including saltmarshes, mudflats, and six large shallow lagoons. This ecologically significant site is part of the Alde-Ore Estuary and holds multiple conservation designations, including SSSI, SAC, SPA, and Ramsar Site, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike. Visitors can expect to see a variety of bird species, particularly during the colder months when wintering waders and ducks flock to the island. Notable sightings include the Common Sandpiper peaking in October and the Marsh Harrier in November. The best time for wildlife observation is often around 1:00 AM, especially in July when species like the Lesser Black-backed Gull and Spotted Flycatcher are most active.
