Geltsdale is a stunning nature reserve located in the north-west corner of the North Pennines, encompassing 5,000 hectares of moorland, blanket bog, and diverse habitats. It is part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the North Pennines Moors Special Protection Area, with a significant portion designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This remote landscape supports a variety of upland birds, including Black Grouse, Curlews, and Hen Harriers, making it a vital site for conservation efforts. Wildlife enthusiasts can visit Geltsdale throughout the year, with notable sightings peaking in October, particularly for Red Grouse. The best time to observe these birds is around 11:00. In June, look out for Short-eared Owls at dawn and Whinchats, while Cuckoos can be heard in May. Other species like Smew and Common Goldeneye are best spotted in February, with optimal viewing times around 14:00 and dusk, respectively.
