Fore Wood is a tranquil and ancient woodland located near Crowhurst, East Sussex, characterized by its unique 'ghylls'—steep-sided ravines that support rare ferns. This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) features a diverse mix of Hornbeam, oak, and Sweet Chestnut trees, and is carefully managed through traditional coppicing practices to enhance its wildlife habitat. In spring, visitors can enjoy a stunning display of bluebells, wood anemones, and early purple orchids. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of species throughout the year, with notable sightings including Goldfinch and Blackcap peaking in April, and Curlew and Green Woodpecker in March. The best time to observe activity is around 01:00, particularly in January when species like Wood Avens and Holly are also noted. Summer visitors may catch glimpses of Silver-washed Fritillary and Meadow Brown butterflies, making Fore Wood a vibrant destination for nature lovers.
