Fetlar is a remote and rugged island in the Shetland archipelago, spanning over 4,000 hectares. Managed by RSPB Scotland, this nature reserve is a vital habitat for a variety of flora and fauna, particularly rare breeding birds. The Mires of Funzie hide offers exceptional views of the mire habitat, where visitors can observe wading birds, insects, and plants, while the viewpoint at Mires of Houbie is ideal for spotting Red-necked Phalaropes. The best time to visit Fetlar for birdwatching is in May, when species like the European Golden-Plover, Twite, and Northern Lapwing are most active, particularly around midday and early afternoon. June also offers opportunities to see Great Skua and Common Snipe, with the latter best observed at dusk. For those interested in seeing Barnacle Geese and Black Guillemots, July is the prime month, with early morning visits recommended for optimal sightings.
