Fen Drayton Lakes, located in Cambridgeshire, is a transformed former gravel extraction site that now features a diverse array of lakes, lagoons, ponds, and riverside meadows. Managed by the RSPB since 2007, this nature reserve supports a variety of habitats, including open water, wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands, making it a vital sanctuary for wildlife. Visitors can enjoy the serene landscapes and the rich sounds of nature throughout the year, although access may be restricted during flood alerts for safety. Wildlife enthusiasts can look out for species such as Little Owls and Pochards, with notable sightings peaking in April and January respectively. February is the best month for observing various species, particularly at around 1:00 AM, when Shovelers and Groundsel are most active. As the seasons change, visitors may also catch glimpses of Corn Buntings in August and vibrant insects like the Common Darter in October, making each visit a unique experience.
