Exminster and Powderham Marshes, located just five miles from Exeter, offer a rich tapestry of wetland habitats, including marshland, canals, rivers, and fields. This vibrant reserve is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is known for its diverse wildlife and historical significance, including remnants of a Second World War RAF base. Visitors can enjoy winding trails that provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching and exploring the area's natural beauty. Birdlife is abundant throughout the year, with notable species including Lapwings, Redshanks, and Wigeons. January is particularly rewarding for birdwatchers, with peak sightings of Greenshanks, Black-tailed Godwits, and Pied Avocets around 16:00. February also brings exciting observations, such as the Long-billed Dowitcher and Eurasian Spoonbill, with the best viewing times around 10:00 and 16:00 respectively.
