RSPB

Bolton Ings is part of the Dearne Valley network of reserves, located just across the river from RSPB Old Moor in Barnsley. This area features diverse habitats, including reedbeds and pools, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching. Visitors can explore nearby paths and trails for stunning views of the wildlife-rich landscape, particularly from the public hides and along the Trans Pennine Trail. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with January being the best month for sightings. Look out for Western Marsh Harriers, Greenfinches, and Mute Swans, which peak in January, especially around midnight. In summer, watch for Spoonbills and the booming calls of Bitterns. The reserve is alive with activity, making it a rewarding destination for both casual visitors and dedicated birdwatchers.
