Culbin Sands is a stunning coastal reserve featuring a unique blend of sand dunes, saltmarsh, and mudflats, all set against a backdrop of mountain views. This dynamic habitat is part of the Moray and Nairn Coast Special Protection Area (SPA) and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Ramsar site, and Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The reserve's fragile ecosystem supports a variety of wildlife, including sea ducks and waders, making it a vital area for conservation. For the best wildlife viewing, visit Culbin Sands in January when activity peaks, particularly for species like Bar-tailed Godwit and Redshank, with optimal observation times around noon and midnight, respectively. Dawn is ideal for spotting Brent Geese, while the dusk hours are perfect for Oystercatchers and Sandwich Terns. The changing tides also enhance the experience, bringing different birds closer to shore at high tide and revealing waders along the saltmarsh at low tide.
