Cottascarth and Rendall Moss is a serene wildlife haven located in Orkney, featuring thick heath and expansive heather moorland. This tranquil reserve is home to various birds of prey, including Hen Harriers and Merlins, and offers nature trails with stunning views towards the northern isles. The reserve is named after Eddie Balfour, whose extensive raptor studies have significantly contributed to our understanding of Hen Harriers. Visitors can expect to see a variety of wildlife, particularly in April when activity peaks. Look for Short-eared Owls and Common Ravens at dusk, while Merlins are best spotted around 11:00. Other notable species include Snipe and Willow Warblers, with sightings peaking around 01:00. The diverse habitats provide ample opportunities for birdwatching throughout the year, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.
