Chapel Wood is a historic RSPB nature reserve located in North Devon, crowned by an Iron Age hill fort. This atmospheric woodland offers a serene environment with rushing streams and a rich variety of native flora and fauna. The reserve is actively managed to enhance wildlife habitats, including the gradual removal of non-native trees and the preservation of standing dead wood, creating ideal conditions for local species. Birdwatchers can look forward to spotting Tawny Owls, Nuthatches, and various woodpeckers, with peak activity for Chaffinches in January and Goldfinches in April. March is notable for Great Tits and Siskins, while the summer months bring Red Deer and Brown Hares among the vibrant wildflowers. For the best experience, visit at dawn or dusk, especially in June when Eurasian Jackdaws and Rooks are most active.
