Cattawade Marshes is an 88.3 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest located on the Essex/Suffolk border, nestled between the two arms of the River Stour. The reserve is renowned for its diverse breeding bird community and is best appreciated from the footpath on the south side of the river, which offers excellent views while leading to the picturesque hamlet of Flatford, celebrated for its connection to artist John Constable. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of wetland birds, particularly in winter when around 1,500 Teals and Wigeons gather, along with hundreds of Lapwing and Dark-bellied Brent Geese. For the best sightings, visit at dawn or during January, when species like the Shelduck and Common Ringed Plover peak in activity around midnight and early afternoon, respectively.
